Summer is over but POCACITO has you covered for a great fall season

Join POCACITO and friends at a range of events in September and October to celebrate nature and the community.

Fall will be full of opportunities to meet and engage on all things POCACITO.

First, POCACITO will join New York Climate Week and will be part of a number of events and activities. On Friday, September 26, from 1 to 4pm, POCACITO's German-American Nature-Based Solutions Exchange (GANBASE) will host a special tour of Jamaica Bay in collaboration with the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) and Kingsborough Community College. Participation is free and open to all who want to close out New York Climate Week with a ride on a hybrid catamaran: https://POCACITOatNYCW2025.eventbrite.com

Many thanks to Elizabeth Stoehr from JBRPC and her team for making this possible to explore together nature-based solutions in Jamaica Bay.

GANBASE is supported by the Transatlantic Program of the Federal Republic of Germany, funded by the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).

In addition, POCACITO members are hosting several events at New York Climate Week:

A hybrid Transatlantic Climate Breakfast with Steffi Lemke, current Green Party member of the German Bundestag and former Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. New York-based practitioners and policy experts, including Elizabeth Stoehr from the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Park Conservancy, will join to discuss how nature-based solutions are reshaping cities’ responses to climate change. Brendan and I will be co-hosting the breakfast, usually held in DC, with our partners at 1014. RSVP here: https://TCBatNYCW2025.eventbrite.com

Brendan and R. Stein Wexler have teamed up to produce Root Tangle Theory a mycelium and mangrove inspired party for people and the climate in the basement of a church in Brooklyn, on Wednesday, September 24 from 6pm to Midnight. Music, light snacks, and art are provided. You are welcomer to bring your own beverages. The event is free.

We hope to see you at one of these events. And there is more in the works: as part of our arts and nature project with four schools across the United States, we will host student exhibitions in Birmingham, Boise, Richmond, and Santa Fe. Dates and locations still to be determined.

The 2025 Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge has concluded with joyful awards ceremonies on September 4 and 5. Congratulations to all awardees and to all the teams who contributed their ideas and concepts. An online exhibition is in the works. We're grateful to the teachers, coaches, and students from all over the world who made POCACITO's inaugural year with the BYDC such a great experience. Expect an announcement about the 2026 BYDC in the coming weeks.

Our organization continues to grow. POCACITO was recognized with a 2025 Candid Gold Seal of Transparency. You can find more information here.

As always, please send us feedback, ideas and recommendations. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events in the near future.

Sincerely,
Max and the POCACITO team
